Hunter's Speech

Today was Hunter's first Speech appointment. He was a little worried as the last time we went to the doctor office, he got shots, but I told him this time it would be pain-free. At his kindergarten appointment they do a general hearing test, but had they not I would have requested one. He struggled with some of the sounds, which I thought he might. I have always wondered if he could hear clearly and as his talking hasn't improved much I wondered if he could hear all the sounds distinctly. Our doctor put in a referral to an audiologist and to the speech pathologist. We have not had the hearing test yet (need to call on that) but like I said, we had the speech appointment today.
It was, as I anticipated, pain-free, though Hunter thought it was a little easy and boring. She said the sounds he struggles with are pretty typical, and he's not that far behind according to public school. (They don't worry about the "r" sound until 2nd grade!!!!) But she has no problem helping him now before he gets older and more set in his ways. The sound we are working on this week is the "sh" sound. He is picking it up quickly and was able to say it with just a few minutes of work. He was also able to use it in words right away. He has to think about how to hold his tongue, so he is slow saying the words, but he can do it. We have homework to do during the week, but she wants to see him next week and she thinks we'll be able to move onto a new sound then if he continues to pick it up as quickly as he did at first.
