Accompaniment blow-out

So Happy Easter everyone. I will do my Easter post tomorrow (in theory) but I had to tell you want happened in church today.

I was accompanying a duet in Sacrament. It was "Come Follow Me" the piano part is pretty intense. It has a section that is all 8th notes and very flowy and is tough enough that I can't take my eyes off the music so if my fingers get fumbled I'm in trouble cause I can't look down to get them back on the right notes I have to do it by feel.
So up I go to play this song. Now Jonathan did his random throw up again last night so Andy wasn't going to church (Yes this is important knowledge). I sit down to lay my 5 pages out and they don't all fit on the grooved area for music. No big I just set them out a little. WRONG!!!! As I start playing I can see the 1st page start wobbling. I just think to myself, please don't fall until after I'm done with this. Sure enough, it fell when I was part way through the second page. Whew, now I start prepping myself the the end of the 2nd through the 4 page 8th note section. As I start the 3rd page tragedy strikes..... MY LAST PAGE FALLS OFF THE PIANO!!!!! So here I am at the part of the song that takes my entire brain power to make it through and I'm trying to figure out what to do. So I am now massacring this part of the song as my brain is trying to figure out what to do. I can't stop my focus anymore to any try to get the attention of someone to help me, cause at that point I might as well stop it would sound better and just pick up the music. (This is where it would have been nice for Andy to have been at church as he would have come up and picked up my music or so he said when I came home and told him what happened.) So at the end of the 4th page there is 1 spot in the WHOLE song that I could theoretically stop, so I do. I then bend down and pick up the last page, scoot the last two pages over and wait for a spot that I can come in and have it sound somewhat decent. So I find the spot and finish the song.

IT WAS HORRIBLE!!!! It is like an accompanist worst nightmare. The best part of this is I have to do the song all over again tonight for the fireside, AND I left the music at church so I can't practice it or tape it all together. It is a gift.

I did have a member of the Bishopric say he saw my music fall and was wonder what to do and was watching to see if I eyed him and he would have picked it up. I also had a couple people say that I handled it well and unless people saw my head disappear probably didn't even notice.

That bites! I remember a similar time when the air was on and the duct began to blow my music forward. To keep it from falling on the keyboard or my lap I blew at it throughout the entire song!

Wish I'd been there--I'd have picked it up for you!!!

Yikes! That makes for a stress inducing experience. Accompanying people makes me extremely nervous anyway. I'm always afraid something like that will happen!
